Having sex can bring a lot of pleasure, but it can also cause problems.

The most important of these has long been unwanted pregnancy. Attempts to prevent it have been made since time immemorial, using a variety of methods that have not always been safe for health.

Today, there are many types of contraception, which we’ve already covered. But there are many other ways to protect yourself from pregnancy—not all of them are effective, but some are very unusual and surprising, and can even add variety to a couple’s intimate life. We’ll discuss them in this article.

What unusual types of condoms are there?

Modern condoms don’t have a particularly rich history, but they do boast constant improvements. Technological and scientific innovations quickly take over the market, and they can surprise lovers.

  1. Condoms with a ruler.  Condoms with a ruler are probably what women have been waiting for, but certainly not what men have been waiting for. These condoms are available in two sizes: with centimeter or inch markings. Now every woman can find out the true size of her partner’s penis.
  2. Glow-in-the-dark condoms.  These condoms contain zinc sulfide and copper sandwiched between two layers of latex. This gives them a higher density. Before use, hold the condom package under a lamp or sunlight for a few minutes to “charge” the condom and make it glow brighter in the dark.
  3. Condoms with antennae.  This latex condom differs from traditional condoms only in the addition of additional antennae, which can vary in length and texture. According to the creators of this solution, women experience greater pleasure when using this contraceptive.
  4. Musical condoms.  What could you expect from an item like a condom? The answer is simple: a lot. Manufacturers of these products constantly try to surprise their customers and introduce something new, especially since users themselves are eager to try something unusual. An example of such an unusual solution is musical condoms. They feature a small speaker and a motion sensor built into the device. The first emits a melody, while the second reacts to tempo and changes in position, changing the intensity of the playback or the melody itself. These are probably the unusual most condoms currently available on the market.
  5. Edible condoms.  There are even some unusual condoms called edible. However, this is just a catchy name and in no way refers to a type of contraceptive, as they are not intended for protection, but rather for a little something extra. They are made without latex; instead, they are made with special substances that are suitable for human consumption and easy to apply orally. The most popular flavors are strawberry, banana, vanilla, and mango.

THE STRANGEEST METHODS OF CONTRACEPTION

However, we still do not recommend using most of the “old-fashioned methods” for preventing sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy in practice; we suggest simply familiarizing yourself with what has survived to this day.

  • Contraception in Ancient Rome.  A certain “ancestor” of the modern condom first appeared in Ancient Rome. However, at that time, it was made of resin, shaped like a cylinder. After some time, the resin was replaced with sheep intestines.
  • Contraception in India.  This contraceptive method is still used in India. It involves physical pressure on the woman’s uterus, massaging the lower abdomen. This gentle pressure displaces the uterus forward or backward, reducing the chances of fertilization, although the guarantees are very slim.
  • Lemon Juice Contraception.  The strangest contraceptive methods involve the use of household items or even common household foods. No one knows where this method originated, but there are some indications of its long-standing existence. In the past, to prevent unwanted pregnancy, women would place a sponge soaked in lemon juice inside their vaginas. While this may sound outlandish, there’s a modern equivalent: aspirin is placed inside the vagina instead of a sponge.
