Everyone has long been familiar with the fashionable abbreviation LGBT, but the third letter in it receives undeservedly little attention.

What is bisexuality and how is it expressed?

WHAT IS BISEXUALITY?

The concept of bisexuality refers to sexual behavior in which a person experiences attraction to both members of the opposite sex and their own. Currently, there is a belief that bisexuality differs between men and women. The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, held the theory that human nature is inherently dualistic and that subconsciously, we do not divide the world into male and female halves in sexual terms, experiencing equal attraction to both sexes. It is only social pressure, social restrictions, and a restrictive upbringing that force us to deny this nature, giving rise to homophobia and internal complexes.

Sexologists conducted an anonymous survey, which revealed that approximately 20% of women have had lesbian sex. Moreover, this first sexual experience with a member of the same sex is described as one of the most vivid and unforgettable, with a very powerful orgasm. Another study by researchers in this field showed that during lesbian sex, orgasm is achieved in 70% of cases, while among women in serious heterosexual relationships, this figure barely reaches 30%. Everyone knows that women are prone to dreaming and fantasizing, and approximately 40% of women have dreamed about having sex with another woman.

How to determine bisexuality

When someone expresses sexual interest in people of different genders, they may identify as bisexual. Absolutely any identity, including sexual orientation, is always a personal matter of self-definition. Guessing someone’s sexual orientation simply by knowing their sexual contacts or relationships is impossible—this goes against the idea ofchoosing an identity. It’s important to understand: many lesbians have had relationships with both women and men. Some bisexuals have only had same-sex relationships. And some have never had relationships at all. It’s possible to never have sex with someone of the same gender but still experience sexual arousal from them, so only the individual has the right to decide how to label their orientation.

Sexologists M. Bailey and M. Chavez conducted a fascinating test for bisexuality. They showed excerpts from erotic films featuring heterosexual and lesbian partners to a small group of female students. During this time, special devices recorded the women’s sexual arousal. The results of this study showed that the women were equally aroused by straight sex and sex involving two women. Bisexuality is common among most women, so  female bisexuality  is not a pathology. Neither is male bisexuality, but when it comes to male bisexuality, things are a bit more complicated.

Statistically, there are more gay men than lesbians in the world (4% and 1%), but data shows that women are more likely to express bisexuality. The aforementioned scientists from American and Canadian universities conducted another intriguing study: they selected 100 men of varying sexual orientations (based on their self-reported responses) and exposed them to erotic films. One film featured exclusively men, the other only women. The researchers praised their arousal and reached unexpected conclusions.

BISEXUALITY TEST

As expected, heterosexual men experienced intense arousal and erections from watching films featuring the opposite sex, while homosexual men experienced them from films featuring men. However, the results of those participants who declared themselves bisexual were far more intriguing: approximately 75% of men in this group demonstrated a homosexual response, that is, they were aroused only by films featuring male pornographic scenes. The remaining quarter of self-identified bisexuals exhibited heterosexual arousal patterns. It appears that male  bisexuality is  a form of belief and perhaps even self-delusion. This may be because accepting one’s homosexual nature is more difficult than accepting one’s bisexual nature. Men are more stable and pragmatic. They are dissatisfied with duality, so they often choose only one path: the love of women or the love of men.

Regarding bisexuality worldwide, it has become quite commonplace in the West. People are increasingly admitting their same-sex attraction. Bisexual sex and romantic feelings for both sexes are also not synonymous. It’s possible to experience bisexual attraction but only desire relationships with, for example, the opposite sex. Psychologists make it clear that there can be a huge disconnect between what’s going on in a person’s head, in their thoughts and feelings, and what they experience in their body, a disconnect they themselves may not be able to quickly recognize and accept. This is a conundrum whose mechanisms modern society has yet to understand. In the United States, expressions of bisexuality have become a fashion trend that is spreading like wildfire. More and more celebrities are coming out and openly displaying  signs of bisexuality in public.

It’s important to remember that you can only judge a person by their actions, not by their sexual preferences, which may be unusual for you. Sexual orientation has no bearing on a person’s personality, abilities, or life goals.

Bisexuality is currently experiencing a true “golden age” in the United States. The topic is being brought up on many talk shows, and young people are becoming openly interested in the experience. The boundaries of sexual attraction, where objects are divided into men and women, are gradually blurring, gender roles in sexual life are receding into the background, and signs of bisexuality are increasingly manifesting in everyday life.
