Who has orgasms in their sleep?

Nocturnal orgasms, or “wet dreams,” are most often mentioned in connection with rapid sexual development. Amidst hormonal surges, adolescent boys experience involuntary ejaculations—called emissions—that leave wet spots on their underwear.

Adulthood is less plagued by hormonal turmoil. Regular sex or masturbation, a release mechanism, becomes part of their lives. But this doesn’t mean that unintentional nighttime pleasures are a thing of the past. For women, sleep orgasms most often occur between the ages of 40 and 50. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for men: after 30, the frequency of “wet dreams” sharply declines.

What causes an orgasm in a dream?

According to research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 8% of dreams in both men and women are erotic in nature. 4% of these dreams end in intense orgasm. Women dream about their former or current partners 20% of the time, and women are twice as likely as men to have sex with celebrities. Men dream about their partners 14% of the time, but they are twice as likely as women to engage in group sex.

The second reason for sleep orgasm is overstimulation due to stress or chronic fatigue. This is the body’s way of releasing and reducing anxiety while you sleep.

Is an orgasm in a dream real?

The most extreme version. The man ejaculates, and the woman’s vaginal, uterine, and pelvic floor muscles contract. So strongly that she wakes up. In fact, for a woman, waking up from an orgasm is the only way she knows it even happened.

  • During REM sleep, blood flows to the genitals, which can lead to arousal.
  • In the arms of Morpheus, we relax and feel less stressed. This is why, for example, some women find it easier to experience pleasure in sleep than during normal sexual intercourse.

Although we experience orgasm on a physical level, it actually happens in the brain.

Unfortunately, you can’t command your brain to give you orgasms every night. But sex therapists do offer a few tips that will increase your chances of success.

Sleep on your stomach

It’s been scientifically proven that people who sleep on their stomachs are more likely to have vivid erotic dreams. These dreams often celebrities feature, and the most likely scenario is that you’re being restrained or tied up for pleasure.

Researchers explain this phenomenon by the fact that, firstly, lying on your stomach puts your entire body pressure on your genitals, which contributes to arousal. Secondly, you can’t breathe fully. As a result, a signal is sent to your brain that you’re either being squeezed or simply suffocated.

Watch or read something sexy before bed

Arousal can lead to release during sleep—if, of course, you manage to fall asleep at all.

Have more orgasms while you’re awake

This seemingly contradictory recommendation comes from Laurie Mintz, a psychology professor at the University of Florida and author of “The Pleasure Point: The Path to the Female Orgasm.” “The more sex you have, the more you want it,” the expert argues.

Abstain from sex

Many sexologists disagree with Laurie, claiming the exact opposite: the less often you experience orgasm in your sleep, the more likely you are to experience it in real life. This divergence in opinion simply indicates that nocturnal orgasm is a phenomenon that remains poorly understood. This doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.
